Trenton is the only genuinely urban place on our list, and city glass work is a different trade to rural glass work. The volume is in side and rear windows rather than windshields, the calls come first thing in the morning after a night that went wrong, and the car is usually somewhere it cannot easily be left: a street with permit parking, a lot behind an apartment building, a driveway barely longer than the car. Windshields here take their damage from concrete, from utility plates and from the trucks on the Route 1 and Route 129 corridors rather than from farm stone.
We are not around the corner, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise: the shop is in Allentown and the run in is I-195 west, about twenty-five minutes. What we do instead is bring the van. For a smashed door window that means one visit, glass fitted and the fragments cleared out of the door skin and the seat rails, without you driving across the county with plastic taped over the opening. For a windshield it means the same, provided the car can stand parked for the cure time and the weather holds. Route 1 runs through the city on its own alignment with concrete deck sections and joints, and Route 29 runs along the Delaware below the level of the streets around it. Route 129 and Hamilton Avenue carry the freight coming off them into the industrial and warehouse blocks. Between and around those, the older street grid is brick-cored, patched, repeatedly opened for utility work and lined with steel plates during it. Broad and State Streets carry buses on the same worn surface all day. The residential blocks off Hamilton, Chambers and Greenwood park bumper to bumper on both sides, so most of the city's cars stand at the curb inches from a moving lane and are left there overnight in whatever light the street provides.

Break-ins, first, and by a distance no other place we serve comes close to. A side window goes in seconds on a quiet block and the tempered glass ends up in the door skin, the window channel, the seat rails and the heater vents. Second is the road surface: the city's pavement is patched over brick, cut open constantly for utilities and covered in steel plate while it is, so a car crossing it takes hard vertical hits that turn an existing chip into a crack overnight. Third is truck stone off the Route 1, Route 129 and Hamilton Avenue corridors, which is ordinary highway damage delivered inside city limits. Fourth is winter, on cars that have nowhere to be except the street.
If you are driving out, I-195 east from its Trenton end is the whole trip: take it to the Route 539 interchange, then head north for about three miles into Allentown. The address is 162 County Rd 539. Around twenty-five minutes without traffic. From the Hamilton Avenue and Route 130 side, the alternative is 130 north to Route 526 east, which is slower but avoids the highway entirely.
