New Egypt is the village at the centre of Plumsted Township, and it is the point where the Monmouth County farmland starts turning into Ocean County sand. That shows up in everything: the shoulders of the roads, the driveways, the dust that comes off a field in July, and the dirt track on the edge of the village that brings race trailers and tow rigs through town all summer. The vehicles here are working vehicles as often as not, and they spend their lives on surfaces that are actively abrasive rather than merely hard.
Route 539 runs straight through the middle of the village and straight up to our door, which makes New Egypt one of the simplest places we serve to reach even though it is the furthest of the primary towns. Nine miles, no turns worth remembering. That said, a lot of New Egypt work is mobile, because if the truck is on a job or the trailer is loaded, taking a morning out to drive north for a chip is not realistic. Route 539 is the main street through the village and the road that carries everything north toward Allentown and south into the pinelands. Route 528 crosses it and runs east and west, and Route 537 passes to the north on its way between Burlington County and Freehold. All three are two-lane, all three carry trucks, and all three have sandy shoulders that spill back into the travel lane every time it rains or a wide vehicle drops a wheel. The village centre itself is compact, with parking directly off the street and buildings close to the road. Out beyond it the land is open field and then pine and scrub, with unpaved lanes, sand pits and the dirt racing surface east of town that puts a fine grit into the air for miles when the wind is right.
