Millstone Township is big, green and thinly built: several thousand houses spread over more than thirty square miles of woods, horse property and low ridges, with Clarksburg and Perrineville as the two places that feel like villages. There is no through-route that everybody uses, which means residents each have their own preferred set of back roads, and those back roads are narrow, tree-lined, hilly and edged with soft material rather than curb. You do not drive far here without meeting something coming the other way on a crowned lane with no room to spare.
That is the shape of the glass problem in Millstone. Damage arrives from oncoming traffic on tight roads, from shoulder stone washed into the lane after rain, and from branches over the carriageway. It also tends to be discovered late, because a chip picked up on a shaded wooded road is easy to miss until the sun hits it at the wrong angle a week later. The drive in to the shop is twenty minutes, which is fine for a planned job and less appealing for a small chip, so the van does a lot of the township. Long driveways are not a problem. What we need is somewhere flat and out of the rain for the adhesive to cure, and a car that can stay parked while it does.
Route 33 crosses the northern part of the township on its run between Hightstown and Freehold, and it is the one genuinely fast road here, four lanes in places and carrying shore traffic. Everything else is small: Millstone Road, Stagecoach Road, Baird Road and the lanes off them, two-way roads that were laid out for far less traffic than they now hold. They roll over ridges, bend through woodland with no sightline, and drop away at the edges into leaf litter and washed gravel. Route 524 through Clarksburg is the eastward continuation of the road out of Allentown. Properties sit back behind trees on long private drives, so headlights and low winter sun come at the windshield through a moving pattern of branches most of the way home.

Oncoming traffic on narrow lanes, first. On a crowned road with no shoulder, two vehicles passing at forty each drop a wheel onto loose edge material, and whatever that throws goes straight at the other one's windshield at a closing speed of eighty. Second is the shoulder itself after heavy rain, when washed gravel and sand ends up in the travel lane and sits there until the road is swept or driven clean. Third is overhead: this is a heavily wooded township, and dead limbs come down on cars in every summer thunderstorm and every ice event, which is impact damage and not a repairable chip. Fourth is Route 33, which contributes the ordinary highway stone strikes to a township that otherwise would not see many.
From Clarksburg and the southern half of the township, Route 524 west is the straight run into Allentown, about six miles of open road. From the Perrineville end and anywhere near the top of the township, take Route 33 west toward Hightstown and come south on 539, which is the easier drive even though it looks longer on a map. The shop is at 162 County Rd 539, on the county road itself rather than tucked off it. Twenty minutes covers most of Millstone.
